This Technical Writing FAQ answers the most common questions about my freelance services.
A freelance technical writer is not an employee...so how do we come to an agreement and get your project started?
And finished?
The Technical Writing FAQ explains my policies, terms, and work style. Click the links to be taken directly to the answer.
Please keep in mind that the policies in the Technical Writing FAQ are general guidelines. Not every project fits within the guidelines. That's why I work with every client on every project on an individual basis.
If you have any questions or concerns about my policies, feel free to contact me. I am more than happy to discuss your needs with you!
Please email me through my contact form. I answer requests for services within 24-48 hours on weekdays.
I do not publish a price list. Rates are based on many factors, not just the number of pages or type of document. You receive a customized quote based on the requirements of the project.
Are you ready to discuss your project and get a quote? Please contact me. I create a customized quote for you based on the type of project and your specific needs. When you contact me, please be as specific as possible:
If possible, I prefer to discuss the details of the project with the person who is authorized to hire me. This avoids communication problems and misunderstandings.
I do not require contracts for small projects that are paid up front. The signed proposal serves as our agreement on the terms of the project.
For large or long-term projects that are paid out according to milestones, I use a freelance writing contract that outlines the scope of the project, my fees, due dates, and copyright ownership.
For small projects, I ask for full payment up front. This allows me to complete the project quickly without having to request multiple payments or create password protected drafts.
For large projects that need to be financed, I ask for half the project cost up front as a deposit with the balance paid out in increments.
I accept these forms of payment:
For most projects, all I need to get started are the source materials, the signed agreement, and a verified payment. (Payment is considered verified when the funds are available for withdrawal: up to 48 hours for PayPal, 3-5 days for bank transfers.)
How long it takes to complete the work depends on the size and type of project. Expect that I need a minimum of one to two weeks to complete small projects. Large projects may take several months.
A specific number of drafts for review and revisions are included in the project fee.
Clients paying an hourly rate will be charged the same rate for revisions.
If the revisions you request change the scope of the project after I have started work, it may be necessary to put the project on hold until we renegotiate the terms of the agreement.
If you need to cancel or postpone the project after I start work, the deposit is not refunded. If I have not started work but already processed the payment, your deposit will be refunded minus an administrative fee.
If you still have questions that are not answered in my Technical Writing FAQ, please contact me for more information.
Thank-you for considering me for your technical writing project! I am pleased to offer:
I look forward to working with your organization!
